How far would you go to learn about the world and yourself?

See the expeditions

Expeditions are more than just pleasure trips. They are a primordial call to human curiosity and endurance.

Like crossing the Sahara or sailing the Pacific, snowmobiling across the Arctic is a milestone in any adventurer's life.

One with the wild.

Weather conditions can be fierce, the long road ahead can stretch into an illusory eternity. Yet, tough as it can be, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. You will never feel more alive than when you're one with the wild.

SnowRider Quest

~313 km
Distance
2 days
Duration
Easy
Difficulty

So you want more than a touch-and-go tour but less than a full-on commitment. Welcome to the best introduction to snowmobile expeditions! Discover an experience very few people dare: Going deep into the arctic wilderness, exploring places accessible only by snowmobile.

This ride has moderate difficulty with limited distances, approximately 150km per day. We will begin the journey from Rovaniemi and quickly enter a long forest ride that will bring us to higher elevations with amazing views on clear-sky days. We have the option to go for a picnic lunch at a scenic location, or stop by and warm up in a local restaurant.

The evening will be leisurely enjoyed at a ski resort, where we can go for extra snowmobiling if we arrive early, or just enjoy a well-deserved rest. The next and last day will be open-landscape riding, as we cross frozen lakes and swamps. This entry-level exposure will earn you the confidence and skills to progress to Snowride Expedition's more challenging adventures.

4 Peaks Challenge

~641 km
Distance
4 days
Duration
Difficult
Difficulty

This is one of our most demanding and rewarding expeditions. Driving on top of a 'tunturi' (hills) is one of the most rewarding experiences in snowmobiling. Views of the Finnish landscapes from the top are absolutely breathtaking.

We will ride over 200km on the first day of this expedition. Prior experience in long-distance snowmobiling is required. If you have not previously done so before, or have difficulties in riding a snowmobile, 200km on a single day will be too demanding for you. As suggested by the expedition name we will traverse four different peaks within four days, starting with the easiest one, and increasing in difficulty as we go along. Your guide will assess your driving skills and decide if you can move forward to the last peak, or whether it's safer to divert the journey elsewhere.

The first two peaks are ski resorts where we can stop at a café for a recovery drink or a replenishing lunch. The last two peaks are in total wilderness and accessible only by snowmobiles. Here we can rest at a 'kota' (small cottage), warm up, or even have a picnic. If you want to challenge yourself and experience the best that snowmobiling has to offer, this one's for you.

Difficulty

This expedition is designed for adventurers who aren't looking for an extremely difficult journey, but are still ready to ride deep into the arctic wilderness for five full days.

We will ride approximately 150km per day for 6-7 hours every day, including breaks and lunches. We will aim to reach the end-of-day accommodation by 4 or 5pm, giving us plenty of time to recover for the next day. Guests who want to ride a bit more after reaching the accommodation may explore the surroundings with the guide, before dinner. This expedition will take us to the most eastern part of Finland, tens of kilometers in no-man's-land between Finland and Russia. This area is known to be wild, have high snow coverage, and rich in fauna.

Although distances may be shorter, driving five days in a row can still be demanding. We recommend previous long-distance experience on a snowmobile. This expedition is incredibly unique. One that is sure to be scenic, spectacular, and unforgettable.

Northern Legend

~1000 km
Distance
5 days
Duration
Very Difficult
Difficulty

Behold, one of the most extreme Finnish expeditions ever.

We've called this 'Northern Legends' for two reasons: First, the goal of the expedition is to bring us to the Inari lake, the third largest lake in Finland and the sixth biggest in Europe, in the heart of the Sami territory – the indigenous peoples of Lapland. These territories are filled with lore and legend. It is said that the bottom of the lake is a portal to an upside-down world. Our goal will be to reach the northern point of this lake following the shoreline, and return back south through the middle, which brings us to the other reason: You will have become a Northern Legend yourself after driving on a frozen lake for a hundred kilometers, and for a 1000km expedition. Very few people could and would do this, especially in arctic conditions.

This expedition is highly demanding, with over 200km of riding on most days. Your guide will support and ensure your safety as much as possible, but you will need to maintain a certain speed throughout the day, with fewer stops and rest. It may not always be possible to cut days shorter, and we need you to be mentally and physically prepared for such an experience.

If you already had a snowmobile expedition with us or with another company, or if you have previously been on an enduro motorbike for multiple days on a single trip, you might be better equipped for this expedition. Please speak to us for an assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Expeditions FAQ.

01What does a typical expedition day look like?+

Every day is different but to set some predictability…

We would start the day with breakfast at 8am. If there's a long day ahead we may start earlier. If the day is shorter and the group needs longer recovery times, we may start later. Before breakfast, your guide will prepare and check the snowmobiles to guarantee a smoother ride ahead.

After breakfast, we will start the journey. We would take hourly breaks to rest, observe the wilderness, take photos, and talk about the ride. Fewer or more stops could be made depending on the riders' skills and the distances we cover. Safety will always come first.

Lunches will be enjoyed at local restaurants. We will also pack our own meals to be enjoyed in nature places — on top of a hill or along a frozen lake. There are wilderness cottages (kotas) where we will can make fire and warm up to feel good along the rest of the trip.

02How long is a day's ride?+

The length of daily journeys will vary on some factors: (1) the group speed and individual rider's skills, (2) weather, temperature, track conditions, and (3) unforeseen events.

A typical day would be between 6 to 10 hours of riding. This includes rest breaks and food breaks.

For longer expeditions of over 200km per day, we ask for the rider's previous experience on snowmobile or similar activities.

03Is accommodation included in the expedition?+

Accommodation is provided during the expedition. Choice can be very limited in some locations but we will always do our best to make it comfortable for you. Rest and recovery is important for this experience.

Most guesthouses have a sauna. This is traditionally Finnish, and can help your body recover better after a long ride.

Dinners will be enjoyed at the accommodation. On some occasions we may go to a nearby restaurant.

Expect to share rooms with another expedition member. You can ask us to book you a private room at an extra cost, if you prefer.

04Will the expedition guide speak my language?+

Our professional expedition guides are bilingual. Your guide will always be able to communicate in English, and another European language — Spanish or French.

For other languages, please get in touch.

05Can I join an expedition as a passenger?+

It would neither be safe nor comfortable for you to join an expedition as a passenger. Distances are long, terrains can be rough, and you would be subject to discomfort with little rewards. The driver would also have to be mindful of your safety which may prevent them from fully engaging in the activity. For these reasons, we do not accept joiners as passengers.

06What experiences would I need to join an expedition?+

We created a grading system to help riders understand levels of expedition difficulty.

LEVEL EASY. Mostly open to anyone who is relatively healthy. Experience driving a motorbike or a snowmobile is ideal. If you had previously driven a snowmobile at a minimum speed of 25-30km/h, this may be the right level for you. You should be able to walk for 5 kilometres with no problems.

LEVEL MODERATE. Longer ride and with the option to navigate technical parts on the journey. Being comfortable riding a motorbike or similar vehicles on long distances is highly recommended. If you had previously driven a snowmobile at a minimum speed of 30-40 km/h, this may be the right level for you. You should be able to walk for 5-10 kilometres with no problems.

LEVEL DIFFICULT. Previous experience on a snowmobile, or on an enduro motorbike on a full day ride is mandatory. At this level, we would be covering over 200km for at least one day during the course of the whole expedition. There will be technical parts during the trip. Your guide will help you out during these parts, but you will need to have the fitness and the endurance to move through the challenges. You should be able to walk for at least 10 kilometres with no problems.

LEVEL VERY DIFFICULT. These are demanding (and highly rewarding!) expeditions. We will be covering over 200km most of the days, with the possibility of multiple challenging parts, especially if weather conditions aren't ideal. Prior expedition experience with us – or an equivalent experience – is highly recommended before taking up this commitment. We would require evidence that you have driven a snowmobile for at least 4 hours in a single journey.

07What if I want to leave the expedition earlier?+

We won't force you to finish an expedition if you feel you've reached your limits. Please anticipate extra costs if you choose to leave the expedition earlier.

1. Leaving the expedition during the journey

Stopping in the middle of the wilderness can be unsafe not only for you but also for the rest of the expedition. If you decide to end your expedition while on the journey, we will still aim to get you to the next planned accommodation, where you can terminate your experience. If you can't bring the snowmobile to the accommodation, we will charge you the cost of 'rescuing' the snowmobile.

You will also shoulder the costs of transporting yourself and the snowmobile back to Rovaniemi. To avoid this situation, share your concerns with your guide every day at breakfast. They will tell you the potential challenges ahead, and make adjustments where possible.

2. Leaving the expedition while at the accommodation

It's much safer to make the decision to end your expedition while you're at the accommodation. Let your guide know at the end of the day or the next morning, before departure. The rest of the expedition will not be refunded, and you will shoulder the costs transporting yourself and the snowmobile back to Rovaniemi.

Below are the estimated costs of transporting yourself and the snowmobile.

  • 0 to 100km from base – 450 EUR per rider
  • Over 100km from base – 750 EUR per rider
08What happens in case of accidents and damages?+

Your safety is our absolute priority. We will always consider safety before guiding you towards technical terrains and/or increasing the speed of the ride.

If, despite all precautions, an accident happens, we are trained to provide First Aid and contact Finnish emergency services. Urgent medical treatment and emergency transportation is covered by our traffic insurance.

The costs of snowmobile repairs and rescuing it from the location of the incident, however, is not covered by our insurance. These would be covered by you, the rider.

If the snowmobile can still be driven with no threats to your safety, you can keep driving it until the end of the expedition. Otherwise, you or the guide can drive it to the next accommodation and another snowmobile can be brought to you at an extra cost. If the snowmobile can no longer be driven, the guide can bring you as their passenger to the next accommodation, and another snowmobile can be brought to you at an extra cost … if you decide to keep going with the expedition.

In a nutshell, these are the costs that will apply to you in case of a crash:

  • Snowmobile extraction and transportation
  • Mechanical repairs
  • Delivery of a replacement snowmobile

The maximum amount you can expect to pay is 3000 EUR. We highly recommend you to secure travel insurance that has Collision Coverage and Property Damage Liability for snowmobiles.

If you decide to leave the expedition after the accident, a refund for the rest of the expedition will not be made.

These conditions apply if the rider is responsible for the accident. No fees will apply to the rider in the case of standard mechanical problems, or an accident caused by a third party.

09Will expedition gear be provided?+

We want you to be comfortable and protected during your expedition. Each rider will have…

  • Winter clothing especially designed for snowmobiling. Our expedition clothes have enough insulation to keep you warm without restricting your movement.
  • High quality gloves and mittens. Finger-gloves are the ideal when riding snowmobiles as they offer better grip and dexterity on handle bars. When temperatures are really low, mittens provide better warmth and protection. We will ride a bit slower when we're using mittens.
  • Snow boots. Snowmobiles are designed to keep feet warm by using the hot air from the engine. But because feet are very sensitive to cold in arctic conditions, we also provide high quality boots.
  • Heated helmets. Regular helmets get foggy in the cold when the visors are down. Our helmets have heated visors that prevent frost from happening, while keeping your face protected from frost bites.
10What should I pack for my expedition?+

Each snowmobile has a cargo box with a volume capacity of 40L for your personal belongings.

With this limited storage, you will have to make strict choices of what you bring. We advise you to pack thermals, tshirts, socks. Merino wool would keep you warmer and relatively fresher. Consider comfortable shoes for evenings in the hotels. Towels and soap are usually provided for by the accommodations.

A thermos water bottle is a must. Water tends to freeze in regular water canisters.

We recommended bringing snacks: oat bars, dried fruits and nuts, or similar. Although we can stop on the way for snacks, some places might not offer provisions.

Bring what you think will help you survive. You can also speak to us for advice. Ultimately, we encourage radical self-reliance.

11Are there legalities I need to know about?+

To join an expedition you will need a standard driving license. An international driving license is requested for non-EU riders. Provisional driving licenses will not be accepted.

Behaviour-altering and/or mind-altering drugs – including alcohol, are strictly prohibited during the rides.

You may drink alcohol moderately in the evenings after the rides. Be mindful that drinking too much can and will affect your mood, energy levels, and performance the next day. We ask you not to risk becoming a liability to yourself and to the rest of the expedition.

Your guide has the right to alcohol test you if they suspect you are intoxicated. If you refuse to be tested you will automatically be removed from the expedition, without refund.

Your guide can remove you from the expedition, without refund, if they think you are unfit for further driving, if you are being reckless, or demonstrating signs that you might endanger yourself or others.

We make these decisions without bias or prejudice, and purely for the safety of the expedition.
